"It's usually the other way around, Maggie! The man goes off to fight in the war, leaving his beloved behind." - William

In 1944, the U. S. is at war and Maggie Culpepper, age 18, is reeling from the death of her saintly mother. Furious with God and afraid of the out-of-control feelings that accompany love, Maggie wants to run from the marriage proposal of William, her boyfriend and longtime neighbor. Her opportunity to leave Watkinsville, Georgia comes when she stumbles into a recruiting center and enlists in the U.S. Navy WAVES (Women Accepted for Voluntary Emergency Service). Assigned to a naval air station in New Jersey, Maggie plans to lose herself in her new military career.

Though a childhood bout with polio has left William 4-F, or physically unfit for military service, he wages an all-out battle to recapture Maggie'’s heart. Managing the family Christmas tree farm by day and writing letters to Maggie by night, he tries to convince her that love is worth the risk and that home is where her heart is.

But witnessing all the casualties of war makes it even harder for Maggie to believe there'’s a loving God who wants His children to have an abundant life. Will she ever be able to trust God enough to let her heart back out there?
